David Briggs has been working in the label printing industry since he began his apprenticeship in 1974. He started his first label printing business in 1986, selling it in 2005 to start LabelHQ.
Gary Walter has over twenty years experience in the printing industry. He started his four-year apprenticeship in 1986, and met David the same year. The two began working together in 1997.
Why the bomber?
Lots of people ask about the pictures of WWII aircraft that grace the office, and the RAF-style roundel (target) on the door. Well, apart from their expertise in label printing, David and Gary share a passion for WWII aircraft which started with their fathers.
David's father was a navigator on Lancaster Bombers for the duration of the war, serving over Germany and Arabia. He was among the many Australians who served with the RAF during WWII. The pilot of one of the aircraft he served in, Flying Officer Raymond Curling, wrote the poem, The "Crash Free" Airman's Home, which is printed on labelHQ's desk pads.
Gary's father lived next to an RAF base as a young boy. Gary grew up hearing about his dad's adventures playing in the cockpits of Spitfires and watching the day-to-day wartime activities on the base. He recalled having to stay inside while the RAF practised bombing runs with live shells.
Reliability and confidence
The Lancaster was Britain's most successful strategic bomber in WWII, probably most famous for its role in the Ruhr Valley "Dambuster" mission. Faced with a perilous task, the Lancasters' legendary reliability inspired confidence in its crews. We may not match the courage of the men of Bomber Command, but we like to think that something of the Lancaster's reliability has rubbed off on LabelHQ.
